Overview

The new Dictionaries API, which has now come out of beta, has been introduced to provide a simplified and consistent API to access content from multiple different dictionaries, while enhancing the ability to find and use data from within the dictionaries.

Along with new features, the Dictionaries API includes best-selling titles aimed at non-native speakers of the English Language, such as the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Longman Active Study Dictionary and the Longman English-Chinese Dictionary of 100,000 Words (New 2nd Edition).

Key Features

Key new features include:

  • Updated search capabilities: More flexible and accurate way to search in order to find content more quickly.
  • Updated content: In addition to the existing dictionary, we've added the Longman WordWise Dictionary, with additional Dictionaries to follow shortly.

Maintained, existing features include:

  • Hundreds of thousands of words, phrases and meanings, including general, technical and business vocabulary
  • 100,000 words, phrases, and meanings in English translated into traditional Chinese characters
  • Over 165,000 corpus-based example sentences
  • Over 150,000 collocations which show words that are frequently used together
  • Over 20,000 synonyms, antonyms, and related words to provide rich lexical network
  • Audio files in British and American English for all entry words and 88,000 example sentences
  • Highlighting of the Academic Word List for learners who are studying in an English-speaking environment
  • Phrases with examples to explain how typical idiomatic expressions are used
  • Grammar and usage notes to help students avoid common errors

More information about the updates to this API can be found in our Blog.

Compatibility with the Beta Version

We have strived to maintain compatibility with the Dictionaries (Beta) API, and you should find any calls made previously will continue to work. However, there are some areas of change that you should be aware of:

  • The ID field assigned to each entry in the Dictionaries Beta API is NOT compatible with the ID field in the updated API. If you are using this ID directly, you will need to find the new ID of the entry in the new API. Going forward, this ID will remain consistent for each entry.
  • The headword and _opts parameters have changed. Firstly, the _opts will now be ignored (although it will not cause a problem if you do specify it). The headword now provides a full-text search on headwords rather than the previous fixed term. Generally, a search should now yield both more accurate and more results than previously.
  • The format and content of the fields in the content should remain substantively the same with the Beta API, with the exception of additional fields that have been introduced with the updated content.
