Halloween is one my favorite holidays and not because of the candy or the scares! It's because Halloween is an odd holiday that focuses on creativity! Unlike many other holidays, which focus on commercialism, Halloween challenges folks to come up with new and different ideas. My own daughter has been creating Halloween costumes on the sewing machine since she was old enough to write and created this great "Robin" costume from scratch, along with several other SuperHero costumes that she made for friends.
Creativity is not limited to paper, tape and fabric. Science challenges require creativity beyond our wildest dreams. And coding to solve problems requires its own brand of creativity.
I recently saw "The Martian" at a theater and while I'm not sure that all of the cool science concepts in the film could really happen, it certainly gave me pause to think about the situation creatively. I even found myself coming up with some similar ideas before I saw them used in the film. I won't say more so that I don't spoil the movie!
I will challenge you though; next time you sit down to write code, embrace your creative side. Think about how you can make an app more accessible, more adaptable, more relevant to learning!
And have a Happy Halloween...don't eat too much candy!
