When an SSO connection is configured, you will receive a LearningStudio-specific URL that can be inserted as a link in a course. This URL sends the user to our outbound launcher, which gathers the session data and redirects the user to the appropriate endpoint at the SSO destination. Here's more information on the launch-link formats.

The URL is provided by the Developer Services team during a partner's development phase, for the Sandbox Campus. When the third party is integrated to a client's campus, the URL is given to Strategic Customer Operations team who will integrate it or send it to the client or third party.

There are two common implementations: a normal HTML link that launches a new window, or a JavaScript-coded launch that opens the third party link in the same window. In both instances, you must have a Text/Multimedia content item in LearningStudio to work with.

Note: LTI Links can only be used in courses. Proprietary SSO links can be used in either courses or the Personal Student Home (PSH or Dashboard). This page only covers Course links. For help with the PSH, please contact your Strategic Customer Operations team.

Creating a Text/Multimedia Content Item

To edit course content, you need to be signed into LearningStudio as a teacher or administrator.

This section is a basic primer; please refer to the LearningStudio Help pages for more information on managing units and content items.

  1. In the course menu on the left side of the screen, click the Unit Header where you want to place your content item. The Unit introduction will appear in the main content frame.
  2. Click the "Author" link at the top of the course menu. The visual editor will appear in the main content frame.

  3. Click the "Content Items" button in the main content frame.

  4. Click "Add Items." If a drop-down appears, choose "with Placeholder for content."

  5. Give this content item a name and for Item type choose "Text/Multimedia."
  6. Click the "Add Items" button at the bottom of the form.

The new content item will appear in the course menu. Click it to edit the content and add the SSO launch link to the course.

Adding a Standard HTML Link

In this approach, the SSO link will appear in the content frame as a normal HTML link, and when clicked it will open a new window.

  1. While the Author tab is selected (above the content menu) click on the content item where the link should appear. The visual editor will appear in the main content frame.
  2. Click the "Insert Link" button the visual editor. A pop-up window will appear.

  3. In the pop-up window, choose "Link to a Website" and click the "Continue" button.
  4. In the Text to Display field, enter the text the user will see (and click on). In the Website Address field, enter the LearningStudio-specific URL that was provided for the integration. Then click "Add Link."

  5. The link will appear in the Visual Editor. Click "Save Changes" to save the content.

In this example that is the only element of the page, but you can use this approach to add an SSO link to any piece of Text/Multimedia content in LearningStudio.

Automatically Opening the SSO Launch in the Content Frame

In this approach, when the content item is clicked from the course menu, the third party website will appear in the content frame. This allows for a more seamless experience especially if the third party site uses limited branding; it is not always the best choice for fully contained experiences like eBook readers.

  1. While the Author tab is selected (above the content menu) click on the content item where the link should appear. The visual editor will appear in the main content frame.
  2. Click the "HTML" button, found at the bottom of the visual editor.

  3. Copy the code below into the visual editor. Replace the {INSERT_SSO_LINK_HERE} text with the LearningStudio-specific URL provided for the integration.

If the learning tool does not appear, click here to launch it.

  4. Click the "Save Changes" button to save the content.

When back in Course mode (click the "Course" tab above the course menu), clicking this content item will load the third party website in the content frame. If for any reason the JavaScript doesn't work, the user can click the backup link that appears in the content frame.
