The Subscription Management System (SMS) is an enterprise-wide system for controlling user access to web sites developed and managed by various business units of Pearson Education. The system is responsible for creating subscriptions, determining if a user is permitted access to a given site, expiring subscriptions, and reporting on system activity. Additionally, SMS contains tools for SMS system administrators and customer service staff to manage the system and resolve end-user problems.
As an enterprise-wide resource, SMS provides substantial cost savings to individual publishing units as well as the organization as a whole by allowing developers of custom sites to focus on their unique applications for disciplines such as math, chemistry or psychology and not spend resources on authentication and subscription management. Additionally, by using SMS, a central enterprise-wide support staff can assist customers on a diverse set of products. Daily reporting assists business managers in assessing the effectiveness of their marketing and development funds. A single registration system reduces the overall customer support volume - as students and faculty become familiar with the SMS registration experience, subsequent product adoption becomes more familiar and less error prone.
