VocalVocab is an educational web-based mobile game created at the 2013 TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon in New York. It leverages Pearson’s Longman Dictionary API and the New York Time’s Trending Articles API to grab content for the game and define challenging words throughout the articles.
Game play begins with the user selecting from a list of the day’s most popular New York Times articles. As the player reads the article she will find that five of the stories most challenging words have been turned into buttons. Each button corresponds with one of the five definitions listed at the bottom of the screen. By pressing a vocabulary word and then choosing the correct definition for it at the bottom of the screen the user makes a match. When all five matches are made the player has not only learned what’s happening in today’s news, but also improved her vocabulary.
